The Commissioned Officers Association (COA) of the U.S. Public Health Service has launched a collaborative public health campaign to increase the number of registered organ, tissue, and bone marrow donors among their 7,000 members. The Association told its members, "the COA can think of no better way to illustrate your commitment to advancing the public health of this nation than to join together and Save-a-Life." This life-saving initiative has already garnered the support of several previous Surgeons General and Acting Surgeons General. The two-part message will be distributed to every officer in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, their family members, and within their communities.
The need in our nation is great. Currently, more than 112,000 individuals are on the national waiting list for organ transplants alone. AOPO and the COA have recommended that every officer join their respective state registry, sign a donor card, and ask his or her family members and neighbors to make a similar commitment. The goal is to start a dialogue that will inspire change within our nation.
