On December 26, a surgeon and medical technician tragically lost their lives when their helicopter crashed on the way to the University of Florida Gainesville to recover a heart for transplant. The pilot of the helicopter also died in the crash.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Dr. Luis Bonilla and David Hines. We, along with the entire donation and transplantation community, remember the selfless and tireless dedication they brought to making a difference in the lives of patients,” said Tim Brown, president of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations.

From New England Organ Bank, "New England Organ Bank has facilitated the composite vascular graft donation for three of the nation's first four face transplants.  NEOB has worked in close collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital and their lead face transplant surgeon, Bohdan Pomahac, MD to help restore primary functions such as eating, speaking and smelling to patients severely disfigured due to trauma or disease.  Dr. Pomahac performed all three of the local surgeries, two of which occurred earlier this spring within just four weeks of each other."
